Virtual Field Trip

Instructions

Eastern Australia has a long and interesting history which we are going to explore through this virtual field trip which maps onto the field trip we would have done under normal circumstance.  You will be able to collect enough information to reconstruct around 400 million years of history.  The oldest rocks we will see were deposited before the dinosaurs, since the first tetrapods evolved and the first plants invaded the land.

Firstly make sure that you have gone and downloaded the Field Trip notes from Blackboard.

When you have these you are going to use the information available here to produce a field report and synthesis of the geological history of Eastern Australia based on the observations you make of the major rock units, inferring the environment of deposition or conditions of formation and interpretation of the changing tectonic settings through time.

You will see a link to each location below.  At each location there may be several sites to visit.  You will find a mix of gigapixel tours, videos and 3D models.  You should explore each one thoroughly, make your own observations which you will place into your report.

Warning: on no account should you attempt the Virtual Field Trip without closed toed shoes, adequate water and sun protection.  Please do not use hammers anywhere on the Virtual Field Trip.
